Cape Kiwanda RV Resort Park History in Pictures
In 1967, Don and Marjorie Johnston purchased 8 acres of sand dunes for $10,000 and decided to build a trailer park. Cape Kiwanda Campground and RV Park opened for business in 1969. The overnight rate was $3.00/day. The first "No Vacancy" sign was first used shortly thereafter. It was developed a few sites at a time by Don and Marjorie with out of pocket cash for many years. In 1993, the two sons, Marty and Ron Johnston purchased a neighboring property once called Dorymen's Fish Company. That building was remodeled to become the new park headquarters, fish market and store. The remaining 1 1/2 acres behind the building was converted from dory storage to RV sites, currently A15 thru A 24.
Marty and Terri Johnston signed on as owner managers in 1997. They renovated the park over the next few years; widening sites, upgrading restrooms, replacing old electric and plumbing. In 2004, the new resort building was opened for business, and the business name was changed to Cape Kiwanda RV Resort and Marketplace. In 2007, Doryland Pizza was opened, built from the remodeled old headquarters and store building. More cabins and cottages are added each year to keep up with customer demand.
